The Sustainable Garden
Why Plant Choice Isn’t The Whole Story
It’s tempting to believe the right plant will solve everything.
But in most struggling gardens, the issue isn’t the plant — it’s the system it’s placed into.
Design determines how water moves, how soil behaves, and how much effort is required to keep things functioning. When design supports the site, plants have a much better chance of success.
This is why two gardens using the same plants can perform very differently.
Before choosing new plants this season, consider layout. Are thirsty plants grouped together? Are slopes planted in ways that slow runoff? Are shaded areas working with or against sun exposure?
These decisions quietly influence water use more than any single plant swap.
Next week, we’ll talk about understanding your site — because no design works without context.
Happy Gardening!

February Tips & Checklist
Consider adding a smaller structure such as a low tunnel or a larger high tunnel to extend your growing season.
Try growing herbs and/or microgreens indoors to add fresh greens to your diet.
Try starting vegetables indoors from seed to get a jump start on the growing season
If storing bulbs, check their condition to ensure they are firm. Remove any soft or rotten bulbs.
Prune grapes and fruit trees in late February to early March.
Fertilize fruit trees (pg. 24) trees at least 6 weeks before they bloom.
Pests and Problems:
Monitor landscape for deer and rodent damage.
Avoid fungus gnat infestations in house plants by allowing the soil to dry between watering.
